PLEATING LIGHT
November 16 – December 29, 2018
James W. Peake - Solo exhibition
Studio 2019 Mothersbaugh
Pleating Light is a collection of folded works and photographs created by Oberlin based artist and educator, James Peake. His passion for origami and teaching developed concurrently starting during James’ time as an Oberlin College student from 2001-2006. He has been an active artist and educator in the Northeast Ohio region for the past 14 years. James frequently travels throughout the world to participate in events organized by the international origami community, and has curated numerous gallery exhibitions featuring works by masterful folders. James spent the first 11 years of his professional career as the Education Director for FAVA, a nonprofit community arts organization based in Oberlin. In 2017, answering to his vocational calling, James became the proud owner of Foldspace Origami Studio in Oberlin as well as the Vice President of the online supply store, the Americas Origami Shop. In addition to his studio and store, James is a teaching artist for the Center for Arts Inspired Learning, which provides art enrichment programs to school children throughout the Northeast Ohio region. Peake’s first ever solo-exhibition, Pleating Light features non-representational styles of folding known as corrugation and tessellation origami. These folding methods rely on repetitive lines, angles and shapes that result in a stunning interplay of light and shadow. What’s notable is that each folded piece is created from a single sheet of paper without the use of cutting. The synchronous interconnect patterns that emerge from plane almost seem to defy logic.
Peake presents his pleated paper sculptures in both physical and photographic form. Photography allows James to capture the work in a very specific setting and experiment with different types of backdrops. Different printing surfaces, including canvas, aluminum, and acrylic panel, work to further enhance the three dimensional aspects of the objects on a flat surface. The reflectivity of light once again comes into play resulting in images that really “pop”.
In James’ words:
“Since I first encountered it, corrugation origami has always struck me as this sort of magical transformative process. It almost doesn’t seem possible given the fact that only folding is employed. I am also continually amazed by how a photograph can transform a pleated surface into something almost unrecognizable. People often look at my photos and at first glance perceive an illusion of sorts, such as a computer-generated image or even a painting. I continually strive to make the viewer question what it is they are actually seeing.”
Pleating Light will be on display at the Studio 2091 Mothersbaugh Gallery from November 16 through December 29, 2018, with an opening reception with the artist on November 16 from 7:00-9:00pm. James will also lead two separate origami workshops for the public, with an Intro to Origami class on Friday, December 7 from 6:30-8:30pm ($25/student, ages 8 to adult) and a workshop on Corrugation Basics to be held on Saturday, December 15, 2018; 1:00-4:00pm ($35/student, for adults and teens - ages 15 & up). Pre-registration for workshops requested, additional workshop descriptions listed below.

Friday, December 7, 2018
6:30-8:30pm
$25/student, ages 8 to adult
Take a crash course in the Japanese art of paper-folding! Learn an assortment of fun and accessible origami models, guided step by step from start to finish. Participants will also fold a box to carry the models home in – you’re gonna need it! Origami terminology and technique will also be taught, along with recommendations on acquiring origami resources.
Corrugation Basics
Saturday, December 15, 2018
1:00-4:00pm
$35/student, for adults and teens - ages 15 & up
The origami corrugation technique is an intriguing method to creating strikingly beautiful paper sculptures. Much of James Peake’s original work derives from this system of reflecting angled creases through pleats of paper. The resulting surfaces dance with the interplay of light and shadow. Corrugations are a great way to improvise and essentially “jam” with the paper. Learn the basics so you can start creating fascinating origami of your own!
